Terms of Service

Last updated: September 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and 1001316425 Ontario Corporation, operating as Salty Hippo ("Salty Hippo," "we," "us"), based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. By creating an account, starting a free trial, subscribing, or otherwise using the Salty Hippo app or website (together, "the Service"), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. What Salty Hippo is — and what it is not

Salty Hippo is an educational screening and awareness tool. It uses artificial intelligence and publicly available information — such as published clinical guidelines and public nutrition databases — to estimate what is in a food, drink, or product and how it compares to general guidance for conditions you select.

Salty Hippo is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Nothing in the Service is a substitute for the advice of your doctor, nephrologist, dietitian, pharmacist, or other qualified health professional. If anything in the Service conflicts with what your care team has told you, always follow your care team. Never delay seeking, or disregard, professional medical advice because of something shown in the Service. Do not use the Service for emergencies — if you believe you are having a medical emergency, call your local emergency number.

2. Accuracy of information

Verdicts, nutrient values, fluid estimates, recipe suggestions, and interaction flags are estimates generated by AI from the photos, text, and barcodes you submit, combined with information available from public sources on the internet. Such information can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and an estimate from a photo can differ significantly from a food's actual content (portion size, preparation, hidden ingredients, and database gaps all affect results). We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any information in the Service. Where a food has a printed nutrition label, the label — and your care team's guidance — take precedence over anything the Service shows.

3. Your responsibility for health decisions

You are responsible for your own decisions about what you eat, drink, and take. By using the Service you acknowledge and agree that:

4. Accounts

You must provide a valid email address and keep your password confidential; you are responsible for activity under your account. You must have reached the age of majority in your place of residence to create an account. The Service is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. A parent or guardian may use their own account to help screen foods for a family member, in consultation with that person's care team.

5. Subscriptions, billing, and free trial

The Service offers a 7-day free trial, after which continued use requires a paid subscription (currently US$9.99 per month, plus any applicable taxes). Payments are processed by Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled. You can cancel at any time in the app via Manage plan; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then.

If your subscription ends — because you cancel, your free trial expires without subscribing, or a renewal payment fails and is not resolved — your access to the Service stops automatically. Your stored data (food journal, fluid log, medication list, and settings) is retained for 90 days after your subscription ends, so if you resubscribe within that time you can pick up where you left off. After that period, we may permanently delete your account data without further notice. If you want a record of your food diary, save or share it before your subscription ends; if you want your data deleted sooner, you can request immediate deletion at any time (see our Privacy Policy).

6. No refunds

All payments are final and non-refundable, including partial months, unused time after cancellation, and periods in which you did not use the Service — except where a refund is required by applicable law (including any non-waivable rights you may have under consumer protection legislation in your place of residence, such as Ontario's Consumer Protection Act). To avoid being charged for the next month, cancel before your renewal date. The free trial exists so you can fully evaluate the Service before paying.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse the Service — including attempting to break its security, accessing other users' data, reselling the Service, scraping it, or using it in any unlawful way. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

8. Intellectual property

The Service, including its design, code, name, and logo, belongs to us or our licensors. You keep ownership of the photos and text you submit; you give us permission to process them as needed to provide the Service (see our Privacy Policy for details on how your data is handled).

You are responsible for what your photos capture. Photograph only your food, drink, or product, and make sure you have the right to take and submit each image. If other people, documents, screens, or personal belongings incidentally appear in the background of a photo you submit, responsibility for that rests with you, not with Salty Hippo: images are processed automatically by software solely to identify the food or product shown, are not reviewed by any person at Salty Hippo, are not used by us for any other purpose, and are not stored as image files after processing. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for the content of images you choose to submit, including anything or anyone incidentally captured in them.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties or conditions of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory — including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-interruption — to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law: (a) we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for loss of data, profits, or goodwill; and (b) our total liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the amounts you paid us in the twelve (12) months before the event giving rise to the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you; nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.

11. Termination

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time (see the Privacy Policy for data deletion). We may suspend or end the Service, or your access to it, for breach of these Terms or if we discontinue the Service; if we discontinue the paid Service entirely, any legally required treatment of remaining paid time will be honoured.

12. Changes

We may update the Service and these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you (for example, in the app or by email). Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable in Ontario, and disputes will be resolved in the courts located in Toronto, Ontario — except that nothing in this section deprives you of any mandatory consumer rights or venue you are entitled to under the laws of your place of residence.
